In 1949, she came to Kent, Washington to teach, where she met and married Norwood Cunningham on February 3, 1950. Norwood died in August, 1979. Florence is survived by her family, Joel and Amy Cunningham; Brian and his fiancée, Katie Cogan; her two grandchildren, Erin and Rad Cunningham, and one great-grandchild, Zack Volpi., Florence loved her cousin, Mary Henry of Spokane, who predeceased her, like a sister. She considered the whole Henry clan to be family. She cherished her summer visits to Hayden Lake at the Henry family compound. Despite moving to Kent, Florence always loved the Palouse country where she grew up., Florence loved her family and her family loved her. Our best times were sitting around the dinner table at her home in Kent, eating the feel-good meals she cooked. Florence did, however, require conver-sation at the dinner table along with proper manners., Florence loved books. Her favorite author was P.G. Wodehouse, a British author of many books, plays, and musicals. She loved Wodehouse because he wrote witty, cheerful books. She belonged to the P.G. Wodehouse Society, and became its international president., Two words best describe Florence: elegance and cheerfulness. She lived as if the old saying "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" was the 11th commandment. She believed there was good in everyone, and it was our job to find it. Mom taught us that we have an obligation in life to leave the world a better place than we found it. You did that, mom., The Memorial Service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church of Kent, 24447 - 94th Ave. S., Kent, Washington at noon on Friday, March 4, 2011. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the St. James Episcopal Church of Kent, the children's playground fund.

Hazel May Wooley Marten

Born August 29, 1920 in Caldwell, Idaho, Hazel May Wooley Marten died on February 23, 2011 in East Wenatchee, Washington., She was born the year women received the right to vote. She experienced most of the history of the 20th century, including the Great Depression, the Second World War (in which she served), the Baby Boom, the 1960s, including the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War, and she lived to see the new millennium., Her proudest accomplishment was raising her five children, Daniel of Los Angeles, CA; Mark of Hastings, NE; Anne of E. Wenatchee, WA; Gale of Maple Valley, WA; and Grant in Holland., She enlisted in the, near the end of the Second World War and was eventually deployed in Germany as part of the 7708th War Crimes Group. In Augsburg, Germany, she met and married her husband of 50 years, Harold Marten. She actually lived the story told in the movie "I Was a Male War Bride". Harold preceded Hazel in death in 1998. They began their life together back in the U.S. in Seattle, Washington and moved following work opportunities to Spokane, WA, then to Phoenix, AZ and to Salt Lake City, Utah before returning to the Pacific Northwest. She made it a point to always be home to greet her children as they returned from school., She delighted in teaching her children and grandchildren about plants and animals; she always maintained a garden of fruit trees, vegetables and flowers, partly as a habit born of the farm and the Depression, but also to educate her family on the process of life., Of all her experiences, she was most proud of her family. She spent her last years in the care of her daughter Anne Conway in E. Wenatchee, WA and celebrated her 90th birthday nearly six months ago with a small group of family members., She will be interred with her husband Harold at the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Snohomish, WA., Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., March 5 at GAR in Snohomish., Donations can be made in her memory to the Women's Memorial Foundation, Dept. 560, Washington D.C., 20042-0560.

JOY FROST VOSBURGH

Joy spent her pre-school years on the Frost homestead on the prairies of eastern Montana, until depression era times forced her parents to move in to Sidney where she grew up and attended school. Joy was a gentle, kind soul who formed deep, lasting friendships; she could pick up the phone and talk to school chums as if they had just finished the prior conversation last week. Intelligent and hard working, she finished with top grades and still worked babysitting from age 8, working in the local theaters at 13, and as a telephone operator (before automated dialing) at age 16. She only could afford one year of college at Northern Montana State, but always looked back on it as one of the happiest, care-free years of her young life., Following her year of college and many years of work as a secretary, Joy married her soul mate, Bob, in 1964, adopting Jeri Lynn and Brian and remaining happily married until her death., Joy's gentle love formed the cement for the family, especially when we were far from relatives living in Virginia. She loved trees, historic areas, craft shows, museums and Smithsonian Institute in D.C., transferring that appreciation for beauty to the rest of us. Joy was artistic by nature and delighted in turning a scruffy looking item into a showpiece for the home. She maintained a beautifully decorated home always. She loved oil painting until her eyesight no longer allowed her to pursue it. She loved all animals, especially the dogs she shared her life with. Above all, Joy was an excellent Mother and Wife as evidenced by her two responsible, successful and happy children and her soul mate who misses her dearly., Joy is survived by the love of her life, Bob; and the pride of her life, her children, Jeri Lynn of Tacoma, WA; and Brian of Ellensburg, WA. She also is survived by one brother, Chuck (and Martha Kay) Frost of Riverton, Wyoming; and numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. Joy was preceded in death by her parents.

Lavonne Marie and Henry Cook Morgan Jr.

Lavonne Marie MORGAN 11/17/1920 ~ 07/04/2010 Henry Cook MORGAN, Jr. 09/27/1917 ~ 02/16/2011 Lavonne was born in Spokane, the only child of Evelyn Blackburn. She attended Holy Names Academy and graduated from Broadway High School. She attended the University of Washington. She met her husband at Wilson's Modern Business School in Seattle. They were happily married for 67 years. Lavonne was noted for her strong faith, joyful heart, peaceful spirit, mild manner and gift of service. She went from "city girl to farmers' wife." She was a wonderful baker: sponge cake, breads and pies were her specialties. She mastered cooking, preserving, money management, and nurturing her family of nine children. She happily drove those children in her "Big Red Van" to myriad school and sporting events. She loved having a large family and welcomed their friends into the fold. She worked elections at Maplewood Heights Elementary in Renton. She drove a mini bus for special needs children in the Renton school district. For recreation, Lavonne bowled for years with her mother at Hillcrest and Skyway Park Bowls. She enjoyed exotic birds kept in an aviary on the back deck and was a friend to stray cats. She loved vacationing at the family cabin on Hood Canal. Henry was born to Lillie and Henry C. Morgan, Sr. in Seattle. He had an older sister, Sylvia Van Woerden, and a younger brother, William (Bill) Morgan, both now deceased. He entered the family flower business by age eight, helping raise and sell flowers at a stall on the Pike Place Market. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and volunteered as troop #350 leader in Foster. He was a voracious reader and always said he had his advanced degree from Knocks College ("the school of hard knocks"). He loved hiking and fishing. He particularly enjoyed hunting elk in the Clearwater River area of the Olympic Peninsula. In September, 1942, Henry enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He served in Pasco as an aviation ordinance instructor before transferring aboard the U.S.S. Cape Esperance (CVE 88) for service in the South Pacific during WWII. He survived several typhoons and was instrumental in saving his ship from a kamikaze attack by rapid recognition of a new Japanese plane silhouette and giving the order to fire immediately to his gun crew. An avid story teller, he often drew upon these naval experiences. He worked as a truck driver, initially delivering oil, then milk. Later, he hauled the spent grains (malt) from the Rainier Brewery to Snohomish and Green River Valley farms for cattle feed. He was nicknamed "Henry, the Malt Man" and enjoyed lifelong close relationships with his customers. Henry was an avid gardener until he was 92, growing the flowers that provided his children with money for their college educations. He was a Master Gardener and an active member of the Seattle Tree Fruit Society. He always grew a large vegetable garden. His greatest legacies are the gifts of a strong work ethic, honesty, practical education, can-do attitude, sense of humor and diligence. The Morgan's are survived by daughters Janet Honda, Joanna Lescroart, Paula Luedke, and Leslie Morgan-Green, and sons Dwight, Bruce, John, Daniel and James, seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Their "adopted children" include Jack Hendrickson, Kent Hutchings and Glen Bunzelmeir. Internment will be with military honors at the Tahoma National Cemetery (18600 SE 240th, Kent) on Friday, March 11th, at 2:30p.m. A Catholic Mass will be said at St. John Vianney Catholic Church (12600 84th Ave NE, Kirkland) on Saturday, March 12th at 10:00 A.M. His life was filled with many accomplishments and he rewarded his family and friends alike with the stories of his service in the U.S. Navy, and the humor and courage of his days on the rodeo circuit. Bill worked with his Dad on the starting gate at the horse races for over 35 years, heading some strong-willed horses with his strong determination. A member of the Sheriff's Mounted Posse for 30 years, he took great pride in the organization and their contribution to the community in their time of need. He also volunteered at the Benton-Franklin Rodeo, working security behind the bucking chutes for many years enjoying his time talking with the cowboys and doing what he could to keep them safe., Bill's 27 years of work history at Hanford proved his devotion to a job well done. Starting as an operator, later becoming a pipefitter, he then worked his way up into management. He currently was a facilities manager for Washington River Protection Solutions. The loyalty and friendship of his peers and crew are a testament to his personality., He was an accomplished husband, father, son, patriot and caring friend.
