Jeffrey Jonathan Kemmish

My son, Jeffrey, died on Wednesday, the 23rd of February, ending an eight year struggle with pain, disability, and depression because of injuries sustained from a 48 foot fall in March of 2003 which he miraculously survived., Jeffrey worked every day with valor, motivation, and strength to fight through the pain and have a normal life. In the past few years the monumental pain he suffered daily, attempts through doctors, medication, and therapy to dispel, finally became too much to overcome and he ended his life., His final message: "To my friends and family whom I've loved, today I end my pain. I fell eight years ago and have never stopped hurting. I'm sorry I'm weak but a soldier knows his limits and I am at mine. I love you, never forget Jeffrey Jonathan Kemmish.", Jeff was a soldier fighting to save animals; an inspiration to his entire family and to dozens of friends. So many hands and hearts touched him in the effort to save his life after the fall in 2003. Months followed with therapies to re-learn how to move his shattered limbs which required numerous surgeries to give him a chance to walk. He endured all of this with more courage and determination than anyone I have ever known., Without a single complaint, he set to work with all his might to recover, and he lived, walked, and talked against all odds because of the fiber of character that made him Jeff. He worked hard to recover his missed months from school with the help of teachers and friends and returned to Mt Spokane High School the following September, excelling in his studies., He spent time in college at Eastern and decided, after a couple of years, to take a break and go to work at a job involving animals. This was a lifelong dream of his and a way to give something back to the community that was his home. He was active in the community promoting animal welfare spending time rescuing animals and finding homes for them. His strong passion for animals was a comfort to him and compelled him to act as often as he could to protect them. My sisters, who loved Jeff as their own, his sister and brother and I are hoping, with the help of the community, to transform the property where Jeff was originally injured to create a memorial dog park., I welcome any dialog about the dog park project, any advice about how to accomplish this as well as any memories others who knew Jeffrey please send e-mail messages to, Also, an account for Jeff is set up under Our Jeffrey Memorial at Spokane Teacher's Credit Union., Jeffrey strived to make a difference in his short life and we are motivated to continue his legacy to promote the love of animals. This could be the beginning of a positive community effort to eliminate the menace of the retaining wall currently accessible to children to this day that is the wall outside the fence surrounding this vacant lot on North Division near the Y., Still, children have been reported playing in this lot and "walking the wall", even as young as eight years old. It is imperative that we prevent further disasters., Our deep felt thank you goes out to everyone who has shown support and love for Jeff, my family, and I., Jackilyn Kemmish

Lavonne was noted for her strong faith, joyful heart, peaceful spirit, mild manner and gift of service. She went from "city girl to farmers' wife." She was a wonderful baker: sponge cake, breads and pies were her specialties. She mastered cooking, preserving, money management, and nurturing her family of nine children. She happily drove those children in her "Big Red Van" to myriad school and sporting events. She loved having a large family and welcomed their friends into the fold. She worked elections at Maplewood Heights Elementary in Renton. She drove a mini bus for special needs children in the Renton school district. For recreation, Lavonne bowled for years with her mother at Hillcrest and Skyway Park Bowls. She enjoyed exotic birds kept in an aviary on the back deck and was a friend to stray cats. She loved vacationing at the family cabin on Hood Canal. Henry was born to Lillie and Henry C. Morgan, Sr. in Seattle. Mark Wilton Burns

Mark Wilton BURNS Mark Wilton Burns passed away in his Brinnon home on February 25, 2011. He was 89. Born January 1, 1922, in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gertrude Ihrig Burns. The middle of three sons raised by a widower who ran his own ice business, Dad became an artillery sergeant with the U.S. Marines Fifth Division in World War II. He landed on Iwo Jima on D1, and knew the men memorialized in the famous flag-raising statue. In a long career as a field rep with Pratt & Whitney, he worked for years as a liaison with Boeing in Seattle. Though he wore a business suit to work, he was always a hands-on guy, ruining many a dress shirt when he pitched in to help repair a jet engine. Dad's career took him all over the world. He took part in test flights for the first passenger jet engines in the 1950s, and in 1963 represented his firm on the around-the-world maiden flight of Boeing's 727, stopping in 26 nations and flying 76,000 miles in 70 days. In his job he investigated plane crashes, which took him to remote locales, from islands off Alaska to far reaches of the South Pacific. In the mid-1960s Pratt & Whitney moved him to Australia, where he eventually concluded his career as field service representative for Australia and the South Pacific. Many of Dad's happiest memories were from Australia, where his eight children spent many of their younger years. We'll always remember the daiquiri parties Mom and Dad threw in Melbourne; swimming in the back yard in Sydney; his pruning of the lemon tree so that it didn't fruit again for seven years; taking us to the Parahan pool, where all the other kids wanted to play with our dad. Dad was a true renaissance man and shared his love of music with his children, all of whom were given music lessons whether it took or not. On Sunday mornings, recordings of opera, Gilbert and Sullivan or Spike Jones blared through the house, even though our tolerant mother preferred Country Western music. He decorated the house with carvings from Papua New Guinea and Aboriginal barks from Australia, which he collected in the 1960s at a time when indigenous art was underappreciated. After he retired and had time to read, we discovered Dad's love of early American history. Dad devotedly documented our lives in home movies and kept a file on each of his eight children with all our school reports, first pay stubs and drawings. He was also a loving grandfather, known for frying up 'eggy' sandwiches for any kid who wanted one. Dad and Mom retired to Brinnon, on Hood Canal, in 1987. He is survived by his brothers, George and Robert; his children, Mary, Kathleen, Mark, Ann, Barbara, Margaret, Julie and Sarah, and their families. Dad, we will miss you. A graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 7, at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery, 205 N.E. 205th St., Shoreline.
