George W. Johnson

George W JOHNSON December 22, 1912 ~ March 10, 2011 The oldest working real-estate broker in the United States, George W. Johnson, 98, of Seattle, died on March 10, 2011, from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. Up until 6 weeks ago, he was still driving himself to his Ballard office, George W. Johnson Realtors, and working 6-hour days. Alan Schauffler of King 5 News, commenting in his 2007 Up Front feature of George called him 'The Oracle of Ballard' a moniker he proudly embraced to his final days. George was born in Wessington, SD, on December 22, 1912, to Oscar and Johanna Johnson who were both Danish Immigrants. The second of 4 brothers, George grew up on the family farm and spent his youth helping his father with the family homestead and learning the value of hard work. He met and married Clarice A. Scandrett in 1933, while they were both attending a small Free Methodist college in South Dakota. He left South Dakota in 1934 after being recruited by the President of Seattle Pacific College (now SPU) to finish his last two years at SPC's growing Seattle campus. He earned his tuition by rising every morning at 4am to work as the school's baker. His parents followed him to Seattle, and after George completed his college degree in 1936, he and his father started a dairy farm in the Broadview neighborhood of N. Seattle, where Viewlands Elementary School sits today. After graduation - and never one afraid of hard work - George ran the dairy's north end milk route before going off to work as an elementary school teacher in White Center and, after sending $5 to Olympia for a real estate license, in the evenings he started selling homes from a real estate office on 15th Ave NW in Ballard - a business he continued to work in until his death. His Ballard office continues on the same land as that original office. Over the next 75 years, he was active in and proud of his real estate profession. He was an early pioneer in the Real Estate Industry, and was a career-long, 75+ year member of the National Association of Realtors. He was equally proud of his long association and life long involvement with First Free Methodist Church, Seattle. George's commitments to his family, to his church, and to hard work were the prized benchmarks of his life. George was married to Clarice until her death in Jan.1993. Then at 81 years of age he found the second love of his life in his widowed sister-in-law, Esther Johnson. In late 1993 George & Esther were married and spent the next 17 wonderful years together until her passing at age 101 in 2010. George cherished these years with his beloved Esther and loved this time spent with his new extended family. He was preceded in death byhis parents and brothers, Walter, Elmer and John.George is survived by his loving children and step children, Jim Johnson and his wife Barbara; Joybelle Johnson-Eriks and her husband Paul Eriks; Karen Johannsen; Robert Johnson and his wife Karen Hoven; JoAnne McDonald; Carolyn Murphy and her husband Gerald; and Janet Henkel. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to First Free Methodist Church, Seattle, the Clarice A Johnson Memorial Fund Seattle Pacific University, Operation Night Watch Seattle, Warm Beach Health Care Center, 20420 Marine Dr, Stanwood, Wa 98292, or New Horizons Ministries, Seattle, Wa. The family would like to thank the wonderful medical care provided by Dr's George Pappas & James Coghland and Providence Hospice Care. There is a special place in our hearts for all of the wonderful loving home care provided to George by his extended family in his final weeks, but an 'extra'ordinary heart felt thanks go to Keri Pederson andKurt Johnson 'Grandchildren Extraordinaire', upon whom an especially heavy portion of this fell and who handled it with an unbelievable outpouring of love and patience, care and compassion. ~ Thank you both so much. If history and habit is any predictor, 'Time to Get Up!!' will be among the first words spoken by dad as he greets his long unseen family and loved ones.

Lyla Kay Gintz

On December 19, 2009, God blessed us with our beautiful baby girl, Lyla Kay Gintz. She was our dream come true. Only 14 short months later, on March 14, 2011, she went home to be with Jesus and is now sitting on his lap wrapped in his loving arms. From the moment she was born she was an absolute joy to all who were around her. She blessed us with her sweet personality and contagious smile. She loved to play with her dollies, read books, dance to music, and tag along with her big brother. Landon loved his little sissy and did everything with her. He was very protective of her and always made her laugh. Everyone who knew Lyla knew she loved to eat! She was smart, a little tease and quite the spit-fire! She was Mommy's little cuddle bug and Daddy's little princess. Lyla is survived by her mom and dad, Jason and Mandy Gintz (Cheney), one brother Landon, Grandparents Bob and Sue Beck (Post Falls) and Doug and Candy Gintz (Spokane), Great-Grandparents Bill and Lib Bailey (Spokane), Joan Gintz (Spokane) and Margaret Forbes (McCabe, MT) and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. A funeral to celebrate her precious life will be held Saturday March 19, 2011 at 10:00 am at Northview Bible Church (13521 N. Mill Rd.). Ray Lee Brown

Ray Lee Brown, a longtime resident of Snohomish, WA passed away peacefully on March 13, 2011 surrounded by his family. Heaven will never be the same after Ray has joined his hunting buddies., Ray was born in Twin Falls, ID in 1929 to Claude and Mazie Brown. It was there that Ray met and married his wife of over 61 years, Jeanette. Out of high school Ray started working for the Hunter Produce Company, delivering produce to the Magic Valley area in Twin Falls. Ray and Jeanette moved to Kelso, WA in 1951 where Ray worked for the Weyerhaeuser Kraft Pulp mill. In 1953 Ray and Jeanette relocated to Snohomish; there he helped start the Everett Weyerhaeuser Kraft Pulp mill. In 1956 Ray and Jeanette made their final move to the beloved "Brown's Hotel" in the Swans Trail neighborhood of Snohomish. Ray was a wonderful father to all the neighborhood kids who would gather nightly in the shop to discuss the trials of the day. Ray would listen and offer advice but never judge. Ray was a great friend to all., Ray was an active 4H leader for the Swans Trail 4H club in Beef and Motorcycle. Ray was active in the community as a commissioner for the Swans Trail Water District. Ruth Greenfield Bolotin

Ruth Greenfield BOLOTIN Ruth Greenfield Bolotin, age 93, died March 15, 2011. Born in 1917 in the Siberian village of Barguzin, Ruth moved with her family to Chita, a larger Siberian town, when she was five, and to China when she was eight (first Harbin, then Tianjin). When Ruth was eleven, the family's U.S. visa finally came through and they came to Seattle. Ruth graduated from Garfield high school in 1935 and then went to the University of Washington. While there, she married fellow Garfield graduate and University student George Bolotin. Although she focused most of her efforts on raising her two daughters, she was also was a talented amateur photographer who developed her own pictures and a prolific writer who won first prize in a writing contest for an article that was later published in the Saturday Evening Post - an accomplish ment that meant a lot to her. But the accomplishment of which she was most proud was the active role that she and her husband played in the founding of Group Health, as representatives of the West Seattle district. Ruth was an active supporter of many Jewish, social, and envi ronmental causes, and a great supporter of Israel. In recent years, what gave her the most joy was visiting with her grand daughter Tammy and her great- grandson, Nate, who was the de light of her life. Ruth is survived by her daugh ters, Suzie Bolotin and Carol Watts (and son-in-law Dave Watts); her granddaughter, Tam my Watts (and grandson-in-law Paul Mobley); and her great- grandson, Nate Mobley. Ruth was much loved by all who knew her, and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be sent to one of Ruth's favorite charities: the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, Doctors Without Borders USA, or Northwest Harvest.

Sonyia Marilyn Bronson

Sonyia Marilyn BRONSON Sonyia Marilyn Bronson, 80, a gifted caregiver for others, dies. August 13, 1930 ~ March 1, 2011 Nothing gave more pleasure to Sonyia Marilyn Bronson than homemaking, caring for her family or spending time putting her extraordinary green thumb to work in her garden. Her abundant gift for beautifying her home, her gardens and for lifting the heart of others was an inspiration to all. In her final years, her kindness, gentle nature and appreciation of life's simplest things gave everyone who knew her comfort and joy. She took full delight in the ever-amazing beauty of the Northwest, seeing a smile light up the face of a child, giving a dog or cat a scratch or upon noticing a bright blossom turning towards the sunny sky. For more than 20 years, Sonyia devoted herself fully to the care and ministrations of those dear to her. Through her own mother's decline as a result of heart disease and through the long, painful goodbye during her husband's decline due to Alzheimer's, Sonyia exemplified the rare qualities of a natural and selfless caregiver. Without faltering, however searing the pain and where others tired of the daily demands, Sonyia abided and withstood the heartbreaking, gradual fading of her loved ones at their side. Sonyia was a natural beauty and struck a tall, elegant figure. She met her late husband Percy, a charismatic, talented musician, one magical summer in Lake Louise, Alberta, where he played in the orchestra at the Chateau Lake Louise and she was the head cashier for the grand dining room. They moved from their native Canada in 1952 to follow their dreams and make their life together in the States, where they lived happily as a couple for 51 years. Sonyia is survived by her brother Miles Gibbons (wife Irene), her sister Helen Woods (husband Bill) her children, Paul Bronson (wife Debbie), Rebecca (Bronson) Kerr, Dana Bronson (wife Roxanne), Marc Bronson and her grandchildren, Devin, Nathan and Vanessa. Sonyia died on March 1, 2011 as a result of complications from pneumonia at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. Remembrances in lieu of flowers can be made to the Bethany at Silver Lake in Everett.
