He proved himself a highly capable operator with a strong acumen for business and in 1965, the Garvey Family of Kansas asked him to launch and operate Advan, a new outdoor advertising company that began with operations in Fresno and Bakersfield, CA and expanded to San Francisco and Oakland, CA. After building Advan into a highly successful and profitable business, Mr. Ackerley founded Golden West Outdoor with operations in Sacramento, CA and Colorado Springs, CO. Ever the innovator, Mr. Ackerley was one of the first sports owners in America to broadcast the team's games on both radio and television stations that he owned reaching more Sonics fans than ever before. Following the creation of Full House Sports & Entertainment under Mr. Ackerley's leadership, two successful sports franchises were launched: the Seattle SeaDogs of the Continental Indoor Soccer League who would win the 1997 CISL Championship and the Seattle Storm of the Women's National Basketball Association. Mr. Ackerley's record of community service and philanthropy both professionally and personally spanned over three decades and impacted communities across America. The following year Danny, Joyce's only son, was born. From 1955-1965 she worked at Collins Engineering, an aircraft parts supplier. Delighted with her new homeland, she soon became an American citizen along with her parents who joined her to settle in Seattle in 1950. She and her husband lived in Shoreline, where they raised 4 children and a menagerie of animals. She spent her last years in Kirkland married to Robert. She worked for Frederick & Nelson, was an avid gardener and had an innate talent for interior decorating. Lisa's gregariousness, hugs and generosity were here signature trademarks. She was happiest when serving food and desserts while surrounded by friends and family. She took great pride in her title 'Oma', by which she was affectionately known after the birth of her grandchildren. Mary Elizabeth Banks

Betty Banks was born Mary Elizabeth Rowles on September 24, 1931 in Spokane to Thekla and William Lloyd Rowles, who was head of the music department at Cheney Normal School, today known as Eastern Washington University. She passed away embraced with peace and love on March 25, 2011. Music was always an important element throughout her life. She grew up in Cheney with her brother Billy, learning to play piano from her Daddy and later flute which she played in jazz bands and symphony in Spokane. She married her high school sweetheart Lloyd D. Banks and together they had two sons, David and Steven. Her second marriage to William Brewster blessed her with a third son, Mark. She loved being outdoors and was quite an adventurer. Hiking, working in the yard, mountaineering and spending time at the lake gave her a great sense of freedom and accomplishment. Never afraid to try something new, she learned to water ski at 40, snow ski at 50, and went zip lining in Costa Rica in her late 60s. She worked for years as an accountant with the Federal Land Bank and traveled as an auditor to branches in the Northwest Region. She was a strong supporter and participant in Spokane Civic Theatre, Spokane Symphony and the League of Women Voters. After retirement she followed her parent's example and traveled around the world, eventually visiting all seven continents. Her last adventure took her to the Antarctic where she fondly and enthusiastically became acquainted with that continent's inhabitants, the lovable penguin. One of her passions in retirement was archeology. She was a member of the Archeological Society in Spokane. On several occasions she traveled with a group of archeologists as a volunteer to several active digs around the world. In Jordan she discovered an Athenian coin from the 4th century BC. It was the oldest relic discovered at the site. Betty was very active and lovingly supported her church, second Church of Christ Scientists in Spokane. Mom is survived by her three sons, her daughter-in-love Karen, four grandchildren, Jason, Erick, Lisa, and Alamea, and seven great grandchildren, Tanyon, Soyer, Alayna, Owen, Angus, Caitlyn and Samantha. The family would like to express their deepest love and gratitude to all the staff at Guardian Angel Homes in Liberty Lake and Hospice of Spokane for all the tender loving care Mom received., You made us all feel so loved.

Mildred R. "Midge" Brown

Mildred "Midge" R. BROWN June 10, 1908 ~ March 18, 2011 Grandma-Grandma passed away Friday March 18th, peacefully in her sleep, in Sequim, Wa; at the age of 102. She's survived by her Daughter Elizabeth 'Betsy' Brown Cliche, Grandson Curt W Achberger, his wife Chandra, Great Granddaughter Abby and Great Grandson Atlas. Born in Aberdeen South Dakota, to George W. Rahskopf and Ottilda Runge Rahskopf, her family moved to Oregon while she was quite young. They then moved to Seattle, WA when she was 5 years-old, in 1911. Grandma and her sister Lucille Rahskopf- Graham (7/6/1903 - 2/28/1987) were active members of their commu nity and were proud of being Washingtonians. She was an avid Mariners and Seahawks fan, and spoke of attending, The Seattle Metropolitans, hockey games. Grandma worked for Union Carbide as an executive secretary for 25 years. On Sept. 30th, 1949 she married, Wallace M. Brown (6/15/1910 - 10/15/1980). They bought their home and lived in Magnolia where she lived for 45 years. They raised their daugh ter, Elizabeth 'Betsy', there. Grandma went on to work as a clerk in the elementary school in Magnolia, until 'mandatory' retirement in 1973. Then she volunteered her time to the Seattle Public Schools and many charities throughout the years. She shared countless great memories of summers spent at the old family cabin in Port Hadlock. Her travels to many places around the U.S., including a cruise to Alaska before it was a state, left lasting impressions. We enjoyed her stories of family, boating and her travels, but most of all the changes she experienced in her many years. Grandma was moved to Sequim along with her daughter Betsy in the Fall of 2006. In February of 2008, the rest of her family moved down from Alaska to help care for both of them; four generations together, ages from 1 to 102. She reveled in getting to know Abby (who's very much like her Great- Grandma) and then later at the birth of Atlas. She was looking for ward to Atlas' 2nd birthday; unfor tunately, she passed away a few days before. He was the light of her days, Grandma's 'Little Man'. Her good sense of humor, strong will and feisty spirit will be missed. She'd say, 'The problem with the world today is, no one has a sense of humor anymore!' We love you Grandma-Grandma. A private family service will be held. As an expression of sympa thy, memorial contributions may be sent to: National MS Society, Greater Northwest Chapter, 192 Nickerson Street, Suite 100, Seattle, WA 98109. www.NationalMSsociety.org Sign Mildred Brown on-line Guest Book at www.Legacy.com

Pamela Christenson

Pamela Jean Zollman-, Christenson peacefully, passed away at age 51,, on March 7, 2011, in Ben, Lomond, CA. She was, born on July 10, 1959, in, Spokane, WA, to Donald, Eugene and Marjorie Louella Zollman. She is survived by her husband, Curt Christenson and their two sons, Joshua and David. She is also survived by her three brothers Jeff and wife Carey Zollman, Mike Zollman and Joe and wife Darcy Zollman and many nieces and nephews., Pamela was a free spirit that did not need worldly goods; she only wanted life's basics, health and happiness for her friends and family. She was always willing to help anyone that was in need. She volunteered at homeless shelters, battered women's shelters and various other non-profits. She was a "people" person and felt great satisfaction in helping others., Another of Pam's passions was reading, whether it was fiction or non-fiction, she loved it all. On many occasions Pam could be found enjoying a book and relaxing for hours. Pam had a fabulous memory; she could recall things as far back as when she was just a few years old. When we visited the family property in Montana, she would point out spots along the drive where their family would pull off the road to picnic and swim. I know Pam would love to have lived on that property along-side her cousins Dawn and Scott Lemon. She loved nature and the outdoors, not to mention Flathead Lake., Pam's personal passion was anything water related and she loved to swim, the water could be near freezing and if she could, she would go swimming. She could float on her back for hours. She was so comfortable in the water; she would actually fall asleep and take a nap while floating. Wherever Pam's journey took her, she would collect a shell or rock as memorabilia and when asked about them, she could recite where she was, what she was doing and how the weather was, just like she was there., She could be seen reading the Bible or the Guide Post since she was very interested in living life according to God. Although she did not attend church as much as she wanted to, she had true belief in the Lord. The clipping below that was found on her kitchen table the day she passed;, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" - Jeremiah 29:11 If you would like to do something in Pam's memory, please reach out and help someone in need, Pam would love that., Pam's Celebration of Life will occur in Spokane, WA, this summer. If you would like to be contacted, please call the home number, 831-609-6011, and leave your name and number.

Raymond O. Abendroth

Raymond O. ABENDROTH 1 April 1932 ~ 14 March 2011 Ray peacefully crossed over on Monday the 14th at 8:55 AM while at Evergreen Hospice Center in Kirkland, he was 78. Born in Salt Lake City, UT to Frank H. and Eva L. (Jones) Abendroth. Ray was raised in Seattle and graduated in 1950 from Queen Anne H.S. Soon after completing school he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, spending the bulk of his three year stint in the waters off Alaska. Not long after Ray left the service he met his future bride to be, Kathleen (Kathi) A. Judkins and in 1955 they were married, beginning what was to be a 56 year journey together. The year 1960 would mark the start of his career with the Seattle Fire Dept., working out of Station 8 on Queen Anne Hill. It turned out to be his dream job. If a career and a personality ever met their match, this was it. He loved every minute of the action, the public service, and the camaraderie of his fellow firefighters, no day was ever the same. Reluctantly, he was forced to retire in 1975 due to emphysema. What was Ray like? Well, he had a mischievous sense of humor and loved to tease you if he could, making someone laugh being the ultimate destination. Ray's thirst for nuggets of knowledge could only be quenched by immersing himself in things like his books, the History channel, and the Sunday paper. He liked hunting, fishing, and camping and at the end of the day a great camp fire as a gathering place to hang with friends and family. During his life Ray valued his friendships and many, many good times were had with all he knew. Family was always a primary concern and he always reached out to help those he loved. Ray is preceded in death by his parents and his Uncle Ray & Aunt Fyrn Abendroth who took him in as their own during his teens. He is survived by his loving wife Kathi and their four children; Ron, Don, Scott, (Gloria) and Susie (Kris); and 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Russell Martin Ojard

When Russ was about 6 years old his parents divorced. Their father raised Russ and his older brother, Maurice, while an aunt raised their younger brother, Jerry. Sadly, Jerry passed away in 1965. Many years after their father's passing, the brothers were contacted by a man who had recently learned he was adopted. He thought he might be their brother. One phone call led to another, and that summer, Russ and Maurice, both in their 50's, not only met their brother, Lloyd, for the first time, but they were reunited their mother Frieda after more than 40 years and were introduced to half-brothers and sisters Gordon, Charles, Audrey, Patricia, and Barbara, who they had never known existed. That experience led to many happy times for Russ and his family.
